Chapter 3 – The Spirit World and How It Functions

Angels are in Hell

The Bible tells us that Hell was created for the Devil (Satan) and his angels:

(2 Pet 2:4) "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;"

(Isa 14:9-12) "Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming [but Satan hasn’t arrived yet]: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. {10} All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? {11} Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. {12} How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer [now named Satan], son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations [by enticing people to commit sins]!"

Hell has Different Compartments

The Bible reveals there are five compartments within Hell, which have been termed:

  • Paradise
  • Hades
  • The Lake of Fire
  • Tartarus
  • The Bottomless Pit

A brief description of these compartments is provided below

Figure 3 – The Five Compartments of Hell

Paradise Compartment

There are two places termed Paradise in the Bible. One is located in Hell under the Earth and the other is in Heaven.

When mankind died during the period between Adam and Eve and the thief who died next to Jesus on his cross, men buried their bodies in a grave, but their souls went to this place called Paradise, or the Bosom of Abraham, which is a compartment of Hell.

(Luke 23:42-43) "And he [the penitent thief on the cross] said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. {43} And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."  See also 2 Cor 12:2-4 and Luke 16:22–23.

After Christ died on the cross, His spirit and soul descended into the lower parts of the earth to await His bodily resurrection. After Christ’s body was resurrected and reunited with His spirit and soul, He then ascended into Heaven in His glorified, resurrected body. Christ later returned for the Old Testament saints, whom He presented to God the Father as the ‘fruit’ of His victory over sin, Satan and His bodily death on the cross.

(Matt 27:52-53) "And the graves were opened; and many [resurrected] bodies of the [Old Testament] saints which slept arose, {53} And came out of the graves AFTER his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

(Eph 4:8-10) "Wherefore he saith, When he [Jesus] ascended up on high [after His resurrection], he led captivity [the Old Testament saints who were held] captive [in Paradise under the earth], and gave gifts unto men. {9} (Now that he ascended [into Heaven], what is it but that he [Jesus] also descended first into [Hell located in] the lower parts of the earth? {10} He [Jesus] that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might [ful]fill all things [prophesied about Him].)"

This Paradise compartment has been empty since those times, as all New Testament saints who have died in the faith since then go to be with Jesus in Heaven to await the resurrection of their bodies.

(John 14:2–3)  [Jesus said] "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you [in Heaven]. {3} And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

(2 Cor 5:8)  "We are confident, I say, and willing rather [for our ‘inner man’] to be absent from the [deceased] body [and to be in Heaven], and to be present with the Lord.

Hell (or Hades) Compartment

This is the place where evil, wicked mankind from every generation since the days of Adam and Eve go to await the resurrection of their body and to attend the Final Judgment. Hades is known as the torment compartment of Hell, and contains people like Cain (Gen 4:8; 1 John 3:12), who was the first person to go into Hades and has been suffering torment there for some 6,000 years…
