Chapter 2 – The Generations of the Earth

Before a Christian can understand how to walk in the Spirit, it is necessary to have a firm grasp of God’s plan for mankind and His plans for the Earth. Some Christians may question why there is a need to have any knowledge about such things, but God has His plan (or big picture) in action, and it directly involves every human being who has walked upon the Earth.

In God’s scheme of things, it matters what we do with these issues and many other Biblical issues that He confronts us with, because how we handle or mishandle them determines our spiritual condition (or relationship) with our Creator, which ultimately determines where we will spend eternity. Therefore, this chapter reveals things about the Earth that may be considered controversial in some ecclesiastical circles, but are nevertheless clearly stated in scripture.

If topics such as the various generations of the Earth (and the heavens—Gen 2:4) in this chapter cannot be understood from scripture, then it will become more difficult to understand the spiritual issues contained in other chapters.

The Bible reveals that the Earth as we know it had a previous existence. This also applies to the heavens that were associated with the Earth back then. Figure 1 reveals that there are three phases of the Earth’s evolution: the Old Earth, the Present Earth, and the New Earth. The following verses of scripture identify these three states of God’s purpose of using the Earth. The ‘Gap Theory’ is the Biblical doctrine that reveals the Old Heavens and Old Earth that existed between Genesis 1:1 and 1:3.

(2 Pet 3:5-7) "For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of OLD, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: {6} Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: {7} But the heavens and the earth, which are NOW, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."

(2 Pet 3:13) "Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for NEW heavens and a NEW earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."

The Old, Present and New Earth

The Bible records that both the heavens and the Earth have "generations". That means there must be an ‘older Heaven and Earth’ that could be used in the same context as we accept that a grandfather is the senior figure in a typical family. If there is to be a ‘younger Heaven and Earth,’ then these could associate with how a son and a grandson relate to the grandfather figure.

(Gen 2:4) "These are THE GENERATIONS of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,"
