Wise versus Foolish Virgins

This article is the second in the series of four that discusses issues related to the Rapture (or snatching away) of the Bible-believing, spirit-filled church.

This subject addresses aspects of the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins that Jesus spoke of in the Matthew chapter 25. The symbols He uses illustrate two types of Virgin Christians and the qualities that He distinguishes between them as being either ‘wise’ or ‘foolish.’ It is therefore essential for Christians to understand what these requirements are if they sincerely expect to participate in the forthcoming event termed the Rapture.

These are Christians who died in the faith - resurrected!

Wise Virgins versus Foolish Virgins

In the previous article, the case was presented that Christianity is divided into three distinct groups:

1. The ‘Harlot’ of Jesus Christ is a Christian or church denomination that commits spiritual fornication with other idolatrous and pagan religions through ‘Multi-faith’ affiliation. Spiritual fornication also occurs from the multi-faith relations into the broader Christian churches through the Ecumenical relationships.

2. The ‘Foolish Virgin' is a Christian who remains faithful to the particular type of Jesus Christ they prefer to worship. These Christians do not accept all the requirements of the Bible as the complete authority to their faith. Instead, he or she will embrace the words (or teachings) of men or women rather than the words of Jesus; however they remain faithful to their church's particular beliefs about Christianity. Such groups of these are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Christadelphians, Seventh Day Adventists etc., because they each adhere to the words of the men and women who founded their church.

3. The ‘Wise Virgin’ is a unique Christian who totally embraces ALL the Bible says, because it is inspired by God. He or she lives their life according to what scripture says and endeavors to ‘walk in the Spirit’ and not in ‘the flesh’ (Rom 8:1). Such Christians are diligent towards doing the will of God throughout their life (Mark 3:35; Heb 10:36) while living daily as a disciple of Jesus (1 John 2:17).

This article will endeavor to highlight the different qualities that define Christians as being either a Wise or a Foolish Virgin from the Matt 25:1-13 parable.

Spiritual Purity and Wisdom

If a Christian is able to prevent his or her spiritual garments of salvation (Isa 61:10) from being defiled by their flesh nature (Gal 5:17), this degree of spiritual purity is representative of being the chaste virgin who is espoused to Christ (2 Cor 11:2).

Although spiritual purity is a fundamental requirement to secure salvation, Christ requires His espoused bride to be more than that. He requires her to be WISE and NOT FOOLISH.

(2 Tim 3:15) "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee WISE unto SALVATION through FAITH which is in Christ Jesus.”

(Eph 5:15-17) "See then that ye WALK CIRCUMSPECTLY, NOT AS FOOLS, but AS WISE, {16} Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. {17} Wherefore be ye NOT UNWISE, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

(Gal 3:3) "ARE YE SO FOOLISH? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"

If Biblical wisdom is a necessary quality for Christ’s espoused virgin to be accepted by Him, then it is good for Christians to avoid doing foolish things. In the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins (below) the essential words that Jesus focused on were that the WISE Virgins had LIGHT emanating from their LAMPS and they each carried an ADDITIONAL QUANTITY of OIL. This additional quantity of OIL kept their LAMPS burning during the waiting period between THE MIDNIGHT CRY and when JESUS (illustrated as the bridegroom) arrived.

(Matt 25:1-13) "Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto TEN VIRGINS, which took their LAMPS, and went forth to meet the BRIDEGROOM. 2 And FIVE of them were WISE, and FIVE were FOOLISH. 3 They that were foolish took their LAMPS, and took no [additional] oil with them: 4 But the WISE took [additional] OIL IN THEIR VESSELS WITH THEIR LAMPS."

Jesus reveals here that God’s kingdom on Earth symbolizes Christians as being either WISE or FOOLISH VIRGINS, who both prepare their lamps before proceeding out to where they will meet their bridegroom [Jesus] – however, the WISE Virgins took an extra supply of oil with them, whereas the FOOLISH Virgins did not.

(Matt 25:5-7) "While the bridegroom [Jesus] tarried [or waited in Heaven as He has for these past 2,000 years], they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at MIDNIGHT there was A CRY made, Behold, THE BRIDEGROOM COMETH [in the Rapture]; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins [the entire ‘virgin’ Christian church – not the Harlot Church] arose [spiritually], and TRIMMED THEIR LAMPS."

In the above verses, Jesus reveals that both the WISE and FOOLISH VIRGINS remain in a state of spiritual slumber and continue to sleep on until the day the Midnight Cry takes place – sometime in the future. When this ‘cry’ is made, both the Wise and the Foolish Virgins are awakened by this spiritual event.

Once awake, they each trim their 'lamp' and proceed out into the darkness to where they will meet their bridegroom (Jesus). Scripture states that while both are venturing out together:

(Matt 25:8-10) And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil [of Biblical truths]; for our lamps are gone out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they [the Foolish Virgins] went to buy, the bridegroom [Jesus] came [in the clouds at the Rapture]; and they [the Wise Virgins] that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door [to Heaven] was shut."

It is during this journey into the spiritual darkness of this world at the time of the Rapture that the FOOLISH VIRGINS realize their lights are going out and that they do not have sufficient OIL for the remainder of the waiting time. They ask the WISE VIRGINS for some of their OIL, but the WISE VIRGINS advise them to go and BUY extra oil elsewhere. To do this means each FOOLISH VIRGIN will have to learn the doctrines of the Bible (2 Tim 4:3; Titus 1:9; Titus 2:1); quote the words of Jesus to those who don't want to hear them, and then be rejected of them as Jesus Christ was rejected of His own people (John 15:20). While they go away to do these things, the WISE VIRGINS are taken by Jesus in the Rapture, and the FOOLISH Virgins are left behind.

(Matt 25:11-13) Afterward came also the other [Foolish] virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open [the doors of Heaven un]to us. 12 But he [Jesus] answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I KNOW YOU NOT. 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”

After the Rapture has taken place and the FOOLISH VIRGINS realize they have been left behind, they cry out to Jesus in prayer saying, “Lord, Lord, open to us” and allow us into Heaven also. When responding to them, Jesus says “I know you not.”This is a clear statement that mere intellectual knowledge about Jesus and church theology is not enough to get Christians into the Rapture. KNOWING Jesus by developing a personal relationship with Him is the most basic requirement of being found in favor of Him (Phil 3:10-11).

Then follows the warning given by Jesus to ALL Christians over the past 2000 years to “WATCH therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

The meaning of the symbols Jesus used in this parable are described below.

1. The Ten Virgins is symbolic of two types of Christians within the faithful Christian church. Both of these virgins believe the Bible is the word of God, but they fall into two distinct categories of being either WISE or FOOLISH Christians.

2. The "Five Wise and Five Foolish Virgins" indicates that both "Wise” and “Foolish” Christians exist together within Christianity. This does NOT mean a ratio of 50% of the church is "accounted worthy" and 50% of the church is rejected by Christ.

A Christian cannot be classed as a “virgin” unless he or she has remained faithful to Christ by obeying His commandments (John 14:15) and obeying His voice (John 10:27-28) as any prospective husband would expect of his betrothed bride to behave herself towards him.

A “Wise Virgin” is one who not only studies the Bible to become approved unto God (2 Tim 2:15), but endeavors to become holy as God is holy (1 Peter 1:16; Heb 12:14-16) and sinless (1 John 2:1; 1 John 3:6-10; Ezek 18:4). Such a Christian will search out Biblical truth in every aspect of life that is possible and apply these truths to their life in the same manner a one would put on a robe (Job 29:14; Isa 61:10).

On the contrary, a “Foolish Virgin” is one who merely accepts the foundational principles of the Christian faith and chooses to ignore the many other essential doctrines in the Bible that are required to “perfect” his or her faith. The fact that they remain 'devoted' to that religion terms them a spiritual "virgin" - albeit "foolish."

A particular aspect of Christian cults is that they prefer to embrace the teachings of ‘men’ (or women) rather than the words of Christ. The words of such leaders are often revered more by their followers than the words of Christ. Some of the leaders and their particular brand of Foolish Christianity are:

- Mary Baker Eddy (1821 –1910 ) – Christian Science

- Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805 –1844) – Mormons

- Dr. John Thomas (1805 - 1871) – Christadelphians

- Ellen White (1827 – 1915) – Seventh Day Adventists

- Charles Taze Russell (1852 –1916) – Jehovah’s Witnesses, to name just a few.

The abovementioned cults are the more obvious in error than denominational churches, because they are generally not spiritual in their understanding of scripture. However the denomination churches are not without their doctrinal errors also. To judge if error is apparent or not, all one has to do is to determine if the words of scripture (especially those in the New Testament) are accepted and upheld as literal truth wherever possible by the church, and then applied to each believer’s life.

All the words of Jesus must be revered and treated with the respect and the application they deserve. If any Christian denies Christ’s words, then it could be said that he or she is personally denying Him. To deny Jesus Christ in any form is to lose one’s salvation (Matt 10:33). Below are a few verses of scripture that relate to this requirement.

(Col 1:28) "Whom we preach, WARNING every man, and TEACHING every man in ALL WISDOM; that we MAY present every man PERFECT in Christ Jesus:”

(1 Pet 1:16) "Because it is written, BE YE HOLY; for I am holy.”

(John 10:27) "My sheep HEAR MY VOICE, and I KNOW THEM, and THEY FOLLOW ME:

(1 John 2:1) "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye SIN NOT. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”

(1 John 3:6-9) "Whosoever abideth in him SINNETH NOT: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him….Whosoever is born [again] of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he [hates sin and] is born [again] of God."

(Rom 14:23) "…for whatsoever is not of faith is SIN.”

Summarizing then, a WISE VIRGIN accepts God’s words in scripture as being truth and applies them wherever possible to his or her life. A FOOLISH VIRGIN doubts whether the Bible’s words are true and whether what is said should be applied to his or her life. Often, the words of false teachers are embraced more by these Christians than the words of Jesus Christ.

3. The "LAMP" referred to in the parable symbolizes the human body, which is made of "clay" - or from the dust of the Earth (Gen 2:7). Such a spiritual vessel is used by God to contain the OIL from which the flame draws its source of energy to radiate light into its environment.

4. The "OIL" within the lamp represents Bible based truths that have been revealed by God the Father during the period He personally taught His child the various truths He required him or her to know and understand (John 6:45). As the Christian fills his or her lamp with this precious OIL, the excess that is created is kept in storage for the day when it is to be needed.

5. The "LIGHT" emanating from each virgin’s lamp represents the truths they speak out to others that accompany their “works” (John 14:12; Mark 16:20), which eventually produces "kingdom fruit" for God the Father – John 15:1-8; Matt 5:16.

6. The "BRIDEGROOM" is symbolic of Jesus coming in the clouds at the Rapture when He comes as the HEAD OF THE CHURCH to be reconciled with the MEMBERS OF HIS BODY – illustrated by Him as coming for His virgin bride who has adorned herself with spiritual gifts provided by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12:4-11) and is therefore arrayed in spiritual purity (Eph 5:27).

(Eph 4:15-16) "But speaking the truth in love, [we] may grow up into him in all things, which is THE HEAD [of the 'body'], even Christ: 16 From whom THE WHOLE [or entire virgin] BODY [being] fitly joined together and compacted by that which every [spiritual] joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love

(1 Cor 6:15)  "Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid."

(1 Cor 12:27) "Now ye are THE BODY of Christ, and [spiritual] members [such as hand, arm, leg, foot, etc.] in particular.”

7. The term "SLUMBERING AND SLEEPING" means that all the ‘virgins’ were spiritually asleep and therefore totally unaware of what has been happening in the spiritual realm around them over the past 2,000 years. Notice this state of slumber applies to both groups of 'virgins,' however one group still proves to be much wiser than the other!

(1 Thes 5:6) "Therefore let us [the Wise Virgins] NOT SLEEP, as do others [the Foolish Virgins]; but let us WATCH [as ‘watchmen’ for our Lord’s return] and BE SOBER.”

8. The term "MIDNIGHT" refers to the darkest period that is about to occur in the world's history when a specific man (the Bible refers to him as The Antichrist) appears on the Earth, who will herald the most terrible period of war and destruction ever known to Earth’s inhabitants. He is known as the Son of Perdition (2 Thes 2:3) or, the Satan's own son.

Much of the Book of Revelation reveals the horrific level of death and destruction that will occur during this 7-year period. Most Christians do not fully appreciate that during this same period, God will unleash 21 specific judgments of His own on the inhabitants of the Earth – the 7-Seal Judgments, the 7-Trumpet Judgments and the 7-Vial [or bowel] Judgments.

9. The "MIDNIGHT CRY" is a spiritual sound that symbolizes a warning (Ezek 33:6) that occurs when the WISE VIRGINS reveal the presence of Antichrist's arrival on the Earth.

They will be able to detect his presence ONLY by assessing the events of those days and by KNOWING how to add up the number of his name to equal "666":

(Rev 13:18) "Here is WISDOM. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six [or ‘666’].”

When this event happens, the WISE VIRGINS will share their discovery of who they know and can prove The Antichrist is to anyone who will listen, and are able to convince the doubters that Bible prophecy relating to Satan's son appearing on the Earth is not only TRUE, but has now been fulfilled.

(John 5:43) "I [Jesus as the Jewish messiah] am come in my Father's name, and ye [both Jew and Gentile alike] receive me not [as either Messiah or Savior]: if another [false Messiah or Savior – say, Antichrist] shall come in his own name [that equals "666"] him [who professes to bring 'Peace' on Earth], ye will receive [instead]."

(Matt 10:34) "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I [Jesus] CAME NOT TO SEND PEACE, but a sword.

Scripture indicates that for 'The Antichrist' to become the world's greatest peacemaker, there will have to be a world war for him to do that. When he does achieve this outcome, he will symbolically become the first of the four horseman of the apocalypse to ride upon the Earth – the white (peace) horse rider who holds a bow that symbolizes war in his hand.

(Rev 6:2) "And I saw, and behold A WHITE HORSE: and he [Antichrist] that sat on him had A BOW [a weapon of war without the arrows]; and a crown [or 'authority' from Almighty God] was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.”

After Antichrist has stopped the next world's war and has brought about world peace for a brief period, many nations will submit their authority to him in a vain attempt to maintain this "peace" indefinitely. AFTER he signs a peace covenant with Israel, the Rapture will occur anytime after that event (Matt 24:36):

(Dan 8:25) "And through his [i.e. Antichrist's] policy also he shall cause [witch]craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and BY PEACE shall destroy many..."

(Dan 9:27) "And he [Antichrist] shall confirm the [Peace] covenant with [Israel and] many [nations] for one week [of years - i.e. 7-years]..."

10. After "THE MIDNIGHT CRY" has sounded, many of the FOOLISH VIRGINS will realize too late that they have been lazy towards studying the many truths scripture reveals about this event and of demonstrating their professed faith towards God. They will then ask the WISE VIRGINS for the necessary OIL that will enable them to become worthy enough to meet Christ in the air at the Rapture.

How impossible will it be for them to prove the many Bible truths required by God the Father (1 Thes 5:21; John 6:45) and to have purged themselves of their carnality (Eph 4:22-23) and expect Christ to allow them to enter into the Rapture at this late stage. Most will not have demonstrated the necessary degree of holiness in their lives (1 Peter 1:16; Heb 12:14) and their personal righteousness (1 Peter 4:18) that God requires every one of His children to demonstrate here on Earth (Psalm 23:3).

All Christians are required to have suffered persecution from others for living a holy life (2 Tim 3:12; Gal 6:5), therefore, such requirements as these cannot be obtained by simply reading the Bible or certain Christian books many times over or preaching from a street corner during a tight time-frame of days or weeks – just to impress God. None of these things will do any good.

As a flurry of internet communications and other discussions occur throughout most Christian circles about this wonderful man of peace the world is feting as a miracle man, certain Christians will be calling him "The Antichrist.” This event represents the WISE VIRGINS manifesting the MIDNIGHT CRY to warn the FOOLISH VIRGINS to prepare themselves to go out to meet their Lord. It is also the period in which certain lukewarm Christians in the other churches (Rev 3:16) endeavor to trim their lamps (or brush up on a few verses of scripture and Biblical truths) in the hope that some last minute attention to their "faith" will be sufficient to get them into the Rapture. It is while they are attending to these things that the Secret Rapture will occur.

(Mark 13:35-37) "WATCH ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even[ing], or at midnight, or at [in the early morning at] the cockcrowing, or in the [middle of the] morning: {36} Lest coming SUDDENLY he find you SLEEPING. {37} And what I say unto you I say unto all, WATCH.
When Jesus comes in the clouds at the Rapture, a point will occur where:

(Matt 24:40-44) "...two [VIRGINS shal ] be in the field; the one [Wise Virgin] shall be taken [to be with Christ], and the other [Foolish Virgin] left [behind with Antichrist]. 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one [Wise Virgin] shall be taken [to be with Christ], and the other [Foolish Virgin] left [behind with Antichrist]. {42} WATCH THEREFORE: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43 But know this, that if the goodman [or owner] of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. {44} THEREFORE BE YE ALSO READY: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

(1 Thes 5:2-3) "For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord [at the Rapture] so cometh [in the manner] as a thief in the night. 3 For when they [the nations of the world] shall say, Peace and safety; then SUDDEN DESTRUCTION [from Antichrist] cometh upon them, as travail [comes] upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape [it].”

11. BUYING SPIRITUAL OIL: While various events occur during the period between the revelation of Antichrist and "World peace" being proclaimed, the FOOLISH VIRGINS will ask the WISE VIRGINS to pass on to them some of their spiritual understandings and experiences that they have acquired during their lifetime. They will ask these things so that they too might obtain sufficient oil in their lamps so that the spiritual light they have may not go out during this period of waiting for the Rapture to occur.

The WISE VIRGINS will not be able to do this, as it will be impossible to pass on Bible-based knowledge and truths gained through experience over many years to anyone else in such a short time. They will then say to the Foolish Virgins:

(Matt 25:9) "...Not so...but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.”

To advise the FOOLISH VIRGINS to go to "them that sell" is to send them back to their pastors, vicars, priests or Bible teachers to whom they had placed their faith in, and advise them to ask these people about the false claims they have made that oppose what scripture plainly states. Such false beliefs and practices relate to Infant Baptism, Eternal Security and any other doctrines that deny the plain truths of scripture. While these Foolish Virgins are doing this, the parable says:

(Matt 25:10) "And while they [the Foolish Virgins] went to buy, the bridegroom [i.e. Jesus] came [in the Rapture]; and they [i.e. the Wise Virgins] that were ready went in with him to the marriage: [supper of the Lamb] and the door was shut [to the Foolish Virgins]."

Here is the critical point where the FOOLISH VIRGINS finally realize that they had been hoodwinked by those in the churches who preached about following the traditions of men (e.g. reformist doctrines) or other lies of "freedom and liberty in Christ" that allow immorality that causes sin to be excused. All these beliefs fail to produce any of the necessary ‘fruits’ of HOLINESS, SINLESSNESS or any degree of PERFECTION in the Christian’s life (Matt 5:48) as required by God.

Many of these FOOLISH VIRGINS will not be able to accept this reality at that time.

12. Immediately AFTER the Rapture, the FOOLISH VIRGINS will realize that the world's most anticipated event throughout history by ALL Bible-believing Christians (1 Thes 4:13-18) has actually happened – Christ’s next return has occurred; and that the Biblical Jesus Christ has rejected them as being unworthy.

(2 Cor 11:4) "For if he [i.e. any preacher] that cometh preacheth ANOTHER [false] JESUS, whom we [the 11 original disciples of Jesus Christ] have not preached, or if ye receive another [false Holy] spirit, which ye have not received, or another [perverted and false] gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him [who preaches such lies].”

When the Rapture occurs, Jesus Christ will be secretly located in the clouds of the Earth (1 Thes 4:15) and at some point will SHOUT (1 Thes 4:16) to command that all of His deceased saints rise from the dead (John 11:43) and come forth out of their graves in their new, resurrected bodies. This means that there will be graves in cemeteries that will be opened supernaturally (Matt 28:2-6), and the remains of the deceased saints will be miraculously reassembled into the person they were in their former lifetime (1 Cor 15:51-55), and taken into the clouds by Christ as the next stage of the First Resurrection (1 Thes 4:17).

Following this amazing event, the remaining WISE VIRGINS who witness this happen will also be taken by Christ from off the Earth. It will be as if they had all been "snatched away" – forever!

The FOOLISH VIRGINS will suddenly realize the tremendous persecution from Antichrist and his forces that will be directed towards them and their families from this point onward. Together with this horror will be the knowledge that God will personally bring the remaining 20 Judgments remaining upon the inhabitants of the Earth BEFORE Christ returns at the Second Coming to commence His role of redeeming the Earth back to His Father in Heaven.

Knowing this, these Foolish Virgins will then cry out in prayerful TEARS to Jesus in Heaven:

(Matt 25:11-12) "...Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I KNOW YOU NOT.”

And again:

(Matt 7:22-23) "Not every one [or every professing Christian] that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he [or only a Wise Virgin] that doeth THE WILL of my Father which is in heaven [see John 6:45 will enter in]. 22 Many [Charismatic and Pentecostal Christians] will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I [Jesus] profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

COMMENTS

It must be highlighted here that getting into Heaven via the Rapture is not an easy task (Phil 2:12; 1 Peter 5:8). This is because getting "saved" is REAL EASY – because all one has to do is simply confess Jesus Christ is his or her Lord to those in the church (Rom 10:9-10) but to become born-again into God's kingdom is much harder.

If it was as easy as many pastors claim it is, Jesus would not have said to Nicodemus:

(John 3:7-8) "MARVEL NOT that I said unto thee, YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is EVERY ONE that is born [again] of the Spirit."

How many professing “born-again” Christians are you aware of whose spiritual lifestyle is reminiscent of the way the wind behaves, as referred to in the above verses of scripture? This spiritual behavior MUST be witnessed in every professing born-again Christian’s life! This is not because I say it has to be this way, but because Jesus said it has to be so!

God bless,

Alan Manson
